Author Tom Palmer inspires students
A little known fact is that Tom Palmer, a well-known author, used to come to school at Allerton Grange. We were delighted that he agreed to visit his teenage stamping ground once more to inspire our students with his very interactive sessions on reading.
Tom worked with our new Year 8 students, our new Year 7s (on one of their transition days) and a very enthusiastic group of Year 5 students from Chapel Allerton and Talbot. He was honest about struggling with reading and not really liking it much as a youngster, until his mum got him into reading the newspaper sports pages. Then he explained to a rapt audience about how his confidence grew until he eventually became a published author.
This was all tied in with a quick-fire quiz about reading, and there was a great opportunity for staff and students to share what they all loved. Getting the quiz answers right meant that a student got to take part in a penalty shoot-out against a member of staff for the Reading Champion of Champions trophy. Despite valiant efforts in goal from Mr Hussain, Miss Green and Miss Watson, the students triumphed.
We had an incredibly enjoyable day with Tom. He loved it too, commenting on the "happy and friendly" environment we have here in Allerton Grange.
