Chemistry

Autumn and Spring terms:

  • Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition metals. This includes reaction rates, equilibrium, pH, buffers, enthalpy, entropy, free energy, redox potentials, electrode potentials and transition metals.
  • Module 6 – Organic chemistry and analysis. Course content includes aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, esters, nitrogen containing compounds, polymers, organic synthesis, chromatography and spectroscopy.

Summer term:

Final preparation for exams, including concise scientific writing and exam technique.

Practical work:

Practical work is assessed and carried out over the year in six additional required practical activities. This totals to 12 assessed practical activities over the two years. These contribute to a pass/fail practical endorsement and do not affect the final letter grade.

Assessment:

Half termly testing on recent and previous work.

Mock exam and end of year exam in exam conditions, following this format:

Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry (37%)

  • Content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5
  • 100 marks – 2 hour 15 mins
  • 15 marks are multiple choice and 85 marks are structured questions and extended response

Synthesis and analytical techniques (37%)

  • Content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6
  • 100 marks – 2 hours 15 mins.
  • 15 marks are multiple choice and 85 marks are structured questions and extended response

Unified Chemistry (26%)

  • Content from modules 1 to 6
  • 70 marks – 1hr 30mins.
