Part-time jobs

Many students start looking for part-time jobs whilst at school. Some students work for family businesses or serve customers at a local bakery, while others get paid to help with coaching/managing younger teams at their sports club.

Part-time jobs are great for many reasons...

  • They teach valuable employability skills, such as organisation, time-management, responsibility and reliability.
  • They teach students the value of working for their money.
  • They allow students to enhance their CV and future job/college/university/apprenticeship applications.
  • They enable students to start building an employment network.
  • They can improve motivation and work-ethic for school.
  • They offer a structured and worthwhile option to keep students busy in their free time and encourage them to interact with others.

At school, students are supported to write a CV and students can visit Mrs Mills any time for help writing cover letters or completing job applications.

Unifrog offers a fantastic CV writing tool, which takes students through the process, section by section and produces a document for them at the end. It can be found on the students Unifrog homepage, in the Materials section. It looks like the picture below.

Full Time Employment

When students turn 18, they can choose to enter the world of full-time employment. In Years 11, 12 and 13, students are shown how to use LinkedIn. They start to create their own personal brand, develop a professional network and learn where to find and apply for jobs.

Some of the job searching websites we encourage students to look at are:

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the largest professional social media in the world. With over 1 billion users, it’s a great way for students to build themselves a presence in the professional world and connect with others. It’s also a great place to start job hunting, with many local companies, such as Jet2, advertising entry level positions or apprenticeship programmes.
