KS4 Careers

AGS Futures

In KS4, students have one dedicated lesson per fortnight, called AGS Futures.

The aim of this lesson is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make key decisions about their future, and to be successful in life beyond Allerton Grange.

Year 10

Autumn Term – Students start AGS Futures with a term of Project Based Learning. In collaboration with employees at New Balance, Year 10 students work in small teams to undertake a Sneaker Freaks project, designing a new shoe for New Balance. Students have a launch assembly, delivered by a Senior Product Manager at New Balance, they then work in small teams, over the course of the term, to design their shoe. Students must consider materials, USP’s, sustainability factors and decide how to market their shoe. At the end of the term, every group pitches their product to New Balance employees.

Spring Term - After Christmas, students begin to look at the World of Work, understanding more about the local and national Labour Market and hearing from a range of guest speakers about their job and career journey. Focus then moved to preparing for PPE’s and the importance of these exams in relation to predicted grades and post-16 applications.

Summer Term – Students explore their post-16 options and look at each option in detail. Guest speakers from local colleges and YLP deliver assemblies about their offer and about apprenticeships.

Year 11

Autumn Term – Post 16 options and applications. Students hear from a range of local post-16 education providers, including Leeds City College, Leeds College of Building, UTC Leeds, LLS, Allerton Grange 6th Form and YLP who all present to students in the main hall. Students then learn how to complete applications for post-16 colleges/education providers. In the autumn term, all Year 11 students have a mock interview with an external volunteer. In their AGS Futures sessions, students prepare for these mock interviews by learning about interview styles, body language and how to conduct themselves in an interview.

Spring Term - The spring term is used to prepare students for life after Allerton Grange; looking at pay sips, understanding how tax is calculated, learning how to use LinkedIn to build a professional network and finding out what will happen on results day.

Post-16 Options and Applications

KS4 students hear from a wide range of local post-16 education and training providers, who give information about their post-16 offer. Students are supported to make applications to their desired post-16 provision. Students are offered a number of visits to local colleges, to learn more about the place and the courses on offer.

Assemblies and Talks

In assemblies, KS4 students are introduced to a number of local employers, who talk to students about their roles. They also hear from apprenticeships specialists and representatives from different sectors.

1:1 CIAG Meetings

All students in Year 11 have a 1:1 CIAG meeting with a Level 6 Qualified Independent Careers Advisor in the autumn term. The notes from these meetings are saved onto each student’s Unifrog account, for students to access, share with parents/carers and for school staff to access in order to support students.
